Did
You Know?
Historically the tiara is a form of crown or diadem. In ancient times
if you wore a tiara it signified nobility or royalty. The forms of tiara
can be extremely diverse.
For
example, the Egyptian princesses had amazingly delicate tiaras made of
delicate flowers in gold wire and inlaid with stones. In the Greek world,
the upper edge of the tiara was sometimes decorated with attached gold
leaves or rosettes, which was the forerunner of the pinnacled crown. In
classical times the Romans developed extremely naturalistic imitations
of wreaths of real leaves made in gold, silver and materials plated with
gold, and were worn for ceremonial occasions.
In
Western Europe during the early Middle Ages the pinnacled crown began
to develop towards its present form and was worn as the symbol of kingship.
The women and the subjects not of royal birth wore the plainer head ornaments.
They consisted either of narrow bands of metal, sometimes decorated with
pearls and precious stones, or an embroidered band onto which were sewn
gold flowers.
Over
time the wearing of tiaras gradually crystallized into a system of privilege.
In modern times the words tiara and diadem are interchanged, however,
the word tiara is no longer only associated with status or privilege.
